When someone escapes emotions with food, they also tend to avoid emotions with strategies like:

People pleasing

When an urge to emotionally eat arises, its because something you fear being with is present:
An old wound from your teenage years, an emotion held by your inner child, activation, beliefs of being wrong in some way, bad, not good enough, low self worth, feeling out of control.
A wound that you don’t have the tools or capacity to be with, and so you escape with food…
The adult who emotionally eats, was the child who:
Was never taught how to be with their emotions.
Was sent to their room to “calm down”, told off for their “big” emotions, called “too sensitive”, or responded to with their caregivers even bigger emotions.
But, that doesn’t work for a child…
Children’s brains haven’t fully developed to process emotions alone. Without a calm, regulated adult to help them do so, their emotions feel really overwhelming.
A child’s nervous system is wired to find safety in belonging to their family unit. Instead of saying “my caregivers are wrong, they should accept all of me”, a child will say “I’m wrong, how can I be what they need me to be?”. If they detect their caregivers do not accept their emotions, they will do what they can to suppress and hide them.
That child grows into an adult who carries beliefs like:
Emotions are overwhelming, scary, and need to be escaped with food.
Emotions are bad, wrong in some way, and must be hidden.
I must be happy to be loveable.
I need to control my emotions.
And struggles with low self worth because:
A child’s raw, emotional self is, arguably, their truest self. When a child is taught that their emotions are wrong and bad in some way, or must be hidden, they internalise that as they are wrong or bad in some way, and their true self, who they are at their core must be hidden.
As an adult, they mask who they truly are with perfectionism, performance, or playing small, in an attempt to avoid activating that old childhood wound of shame or bad-ness, lack of belonging or feeling of not being good enough.
